Chapter Twelve

Helel Malach

Sam awoke to the sounds of a marina—ship’s crews yelling out orders, cargo being transferred from ship to dock, and the sounds of vendors calling out their wares for sale to the fresh visitors.

He looked around the cabin, and nearly everyone had gone, except for Emma, who had spent the previous day and night still recovering from the ordeal with the dragons.

He slipped out of his bunk and sat beside her softly, causing her to stir.

“Hey shield guru, I think we made it to port,” he said quietly as her eyes fluttered open.

“Call me shield master,” she toyed with him. “Is it still night?”

Sam shrugged. “No idea. You’d think they would have a few windows down here in the dungeon.”

“It is a very old ship.” She smiled and smacked him.

Once out on the deck, the full sight of Cembra City’s port came into view. The deck mates were already lashing their ship snugly to the dock, with the other two ships coasting into port just behind them.

The port was larger than most, with buildings scattered on both banks of the river and multiple ships being loaded and unloaded of their cargo.

They weren’t awake when the fleet left the Yarey and headed up the river to the interior of Themane where the region’s city lay, but Gus had already given them the complete guided tour before even leaving for Mentorship. Still, as they embarked and met the throngs of people in the central market, Sam was truly awed at what he saw.

Being from the forest, Themane people were master wood craftsmen. Each of the city’s buildings were expertly constructed into ornate works of art, so much so that the group felt as though they were walking through a living museum.

The city’s residents were bustling about the streets, in and out of shops, carrying baskets of all sorts of fruits and vegetables, fish, and enormous breads. They were all shorter like the deck mates, making Sam and the others look strangely like adolescent giants in size.

“Welcome to Cembra City!” Gus bubbled goofily. “Where should we go first?”

Emma shook her head. “I don’t think we have the time to explore, Gus—look, everyone is already gathering over there by the statue.”

She was right. All ships had docked in record time, and students were spilling out of the docks and making their way toward the growing crowd.

“Mentees, follow me this way!” The young Mentor motioned toward the trees behind the little park where the wood statue of a well-dressed man stood proudly among the beautiful yellow and orange flowers at its base. “Make sure you have all of your belongings!”

None of the Cembra inhabitants seemed to pay mind to the group of students as they disappeared into the trees like a stream of people exiting a stadium after a Kolar game, but no doubt they were used to it as Mentorship occurred every year.

They followed the throng of students into the trees, where they promptly spotted a tower nestled neatly among the trees spiraling high into the sky.
